Thu Oct 27 01:45:06 2016  zsmithnyc:howdy - can somebody point me towards the person that deals/maintains the buildservers for Cassandra? I've heard that there is a need for some better ARM64 build nodes and I'd like to offer some up for free via our on-demand bare metal platform. We have just added a 96 core Cavium ARM64 as an on-demand config.
Thu Oct 27 01:45:23 2016  zsmithnyc:(if this is the wrong place for this, please direct me where it would be appropriate, thanks!)
Thu Oct 27 01:45:37 2016  zsmithnyc:and "we" = packet.net
Thu Oct 27 02:06:23 2016  exlt:zsmithnyc: I'm working on an initial POC with ASF INFRA to set up build/test slaves in the ASF Jenkins for Cassandra - https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-12823
Thu Oct 27 02:06:59 2016  exlt:zsmithnyc: if this goes well, perhaps another architecture for builds could be worked in, but it's a little early to tell :)
Thu Oct 27 02:07:19 2016  zsmithnyc:excellent
Thu Oct 27 02:08:00 2016  zsmithnyc:let us know if we can help -- we'd be happy to support with on-demand intel or arm64 metal for this need
Thu Oct 27 02:11:27 2016  exlt:the basic idea is that the community can donate the resources they need for successful Cassandra builds and testing, so if you're interested, follow that ticket, and the dev@ mailing list will get some notes about how this is going, as it progresses, too
Thu Oct 27 02:12:06 2016  exlt:or hang out here ;)
Thu Oct 27 02:12:30 2016  zsmithnyc:hang I can do. I'll follow the ticket and happy to help how I can. thanks !
Thu Oct 27 02:12:41 2016  exlt:nice. thank you!
Thu Oct 27 02:13:08 2016  exlt:does C* build properly on arm64, btw?

Thu Oct 27 21:24:17 2016  mhall119:Hi everyone, I've seen https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-12622 but there's been no activity on it, it would be create to have cassandra installable as a snap

Thu Oct 27 21:29:27 2016  cassandra584:Hi. When performing rolling restart of cassandra Cluster. How long does one need to wait before moving to another node. Is it enough to just wait for the restarted node to start accepting requests? (i.e. can I assume that when a node starts accepting requests it has already received all critical data from the other node(s)). I am more wondering about the bare minimum to ensure the data is not loast in the proccess. Thank
Thu Oct 27 21:31:35 2016  jeffj:cassandra584: better question for #cassandra , question is probably more nuanced than a single line response
Thu Oct 27 21:32:17 2016  jeffj:mhall119: i imagine it's just a matter of manpower to make it happen. i dont use that packaging format, so i dont feel adequate to review/test.
Thu Oct 27 21:34:22 2016  jeffj:exlt: thoughts on #12622 ?
Thu Oct 27 21:34:23 2016  CassBotJr:https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CASSANDRA-12622 (Open; Unresolved; 3.x): "Snap package of Cassandra"
Thu Oct 27 21:34:26 2016  mstepura:Joined the channel
Thu Oct 27 21:35:08 2016  driftx:he doesn't use snap either, heh
Thu Oct 27 21:36:38 2016  exlt:yeah, if someone wants to do the work, OK, I won't stop them - after a brief look at snap, I'd bet it is a fleeting fad
Thu Oct 27 21:38:39 2016  jeffj:work's done, there's a patch there
Thu Oct 27 21:38:53 2016  exlt:I'd be more interested in getting back to a usable redhat/ spec in-tree - I know that would actually be used by people
Thu Oct 27 21:38:56 2016  jeffj:but yea, i'm not jumping up and down for it
Thu Oct 27 21:39:02 2016  jeffj:agreed there, too
Thu Oct 27 21:42:03 2016  mhall119:ok, so the patch is there, is the blocker just finding someone within the cassandra project who can test it?
Thu Oct 27 21:43:09 2016  jeffj:well, and someone within the project who agrees it's useful enough to continue maintaining it for every version in the future, since the patch seems to hard code a version string
Thu Oct 27 21:43:16 2016  exlt:since these files touch nothing else, I would be +0 for merging - if it breaks with changes in the future, who supports it in an ongoing way
Thu Oct 27 21:44:25 2016  jeffj:less worried it'll break other things in the future, more worried that people will forget to bump version strings
Thu Oct 27 21:44:32 2016  jeffj:one more step in the release process
Thu Oct 27 21:45:04 2016  exlt:so if someone is considering getting cassandra into some snap repo somewhere it is installable, they should just clone the c* git repo, throw down these files and do their build - there's nothing here that actually needs to be in cassandra proper, no?
Thu Oct 27 21:45:08 2016  mhall119:the version string could probably be injected at build time (that's what I've done with other projects)
Thu Oct 27 21:45:25 2016  exlt:(this is the way datastax does rpms, btw)
Thu Oct 27 21:45:49 2016  mhall119:exlt: ideally it would be some trusted entity that's uploading the .snap for users
Thu Oct 27 21:45:54 2016  jeffj:WOULD be nice to have official RPMs though
Thu Oct 27 21:46:08 2016  mhall119:I suppose it could be datastax that does that, rather than someone here
Thu Oct 27 21:46:16 2016  exlt:doubtful
Thu Oct 27 21:47:52 2016  exlt:there needs to be a demand to make the work valuable, and I'd never even heard of snap until that mailing list post
Thu Oct 27 21:48:20 2016  driftx:same
Thu Oct 27 21:48:24 2016  exlt:so if there are 100 active users saying they *must* have it! that holds weight

Thu Oct 27 21:58:28 2016  mhall119:ok, thanks for the replies
Thu Oct 27 21:58:54 2016  mhall119:I'm willing to help in whatever way I can if anybody decides to pick it up
Thu Oct 27 21:59:41 2016  exlt:snapcraft.io lists "Cassandra" at the bottom as a featured snap - that should say "Apache Cassandra" ;) - if you have install stats, it might be interesting
Thu Oct 27 22:00:20 2016  exlt:I assume you are uploading this existing snap to the site, mhall119?
Thu Oct 27 22:03:31 2016  exlt:oh right. now I remember this.. https://bugs.debian.org/826884 - upstream has ignored this PR, too
Thu Oct 27 22:06:16 2016  mhall119:hmmm, that PR looks to be for snapd, not cassandra
Thu Oct 27 22:06:28 2016  mhall119:debian wouldn't be "upstream" for cassandra anyway
Thu Oct 27 22:06:46 2016  exlt:right. as a debian stable user, I can't use the service, since snapd is uninstallable
Thu Oct 27 22:07:00 2016  exlt:and it won't be making it to the next release, either, which is soon..
Thu Oct 27 22:07:17 2016  mhall119:it's in unstable, IIRC
Thu Oct 27 22:07:38 2016  exlt:ubuntu has a bit of a habit of coming up with interesting ideas that peeter out, and ignoring their upstream, debian
Thu Oct 27 22:08:07 2016  exlt:correct, it's in unstable and seems like it will just stay there :)
Thu Oct 27 22:08:22 2016  exlt:(wrong channel for this topic :) )
Thu Oct 27 22:10:08 2016  zznate:for generisizing packaging, i'm a fan of fpm https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm/wiki
Thu Oct 27 22:10:32 2016  mhall119:ev (who submitted the patch) uploaded his snap to the store, but only in the "edge" channel so it's not actually visible to anybody yet unless they already know its there
Thu Oct 27 22:11:18 2016  mhall119:even still, the store stats show 178 downloads from 172 unique users
Thu Oct 27 22:11:54 2016  zznate:mhall119 do you know any of the folks at snapcraft?
Thu Oct 27 22:12:15 2016  mhall119:yes, should have started off with that, I do work for Canonical
Thu Oct 27 22:13:14 2016  mhall119:though it's after my work hours, so I'm not technically being paid to do this :)
Thu Oct 27 22:18:19 2016  zznate:cool. really appreciate any efforts bringing this to a larger crowd
Thu Oct 27 22:21:53 2016  exlt:that's a relatively fair number for downloads, thanks for looking that up
